Vulture swoops on fine print of NY Phil rape claims

Sammy Sussman, the freelance journalist who first reported the sexual misdeeds of two players who were subsequently sacked, has gained access to court filings by the New York Philharmonic with explicit details on the assaults on a fellow-musician. The allegations in Vulture.com include one of drugging a victim before raping her.

One particularly troubling aspect is that the earliest complaint to the NY Phil against one of the musicians dates back to 2006. Nothing appears to have been done. The executive director (later president) of the NY Phil from 2000 to 2012 was Zarin Mehta.

Sussman writes: ‘Beyond the individual accusations… (the) investigation suggests that sexism and misogyny continue to plague the upper ranks of classical music, one that would allow many of these allegations to go unaddressed for years. After Kizer’s allegations came to light last April, the president of Local 802 pledged to “erase the culture of complicity that has raged at the N.Y. Philharmonic for too long.” Today, with a new music director — and, thanks to the dramatic consequences of the past year of allegations and inquiries, a new president — the Philharmonic has the opportunity to address these problems head-on.’
