Breaking: San Francisco Symphony faces strike a week before season

Breaking: San Francisco Symphony faces strike a week before season

The orchestra’s musicians have authorised a walkout unless they get a deal by September 12.

‘After nearly two years of negotiating, it has become clear that we have no choice but to plan for a strike,’ said violist David Gaudry, the musicians’ chief negotiator.

The organisation said its ‘last, best and final’ offer involves a base starting salary of $189,332, rising to $196,976 by 2027.

The atmosphere is said to be acrid. Musicians are furious at the board for driving out music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, who has opted instead for the LA Phil. They also complain of lack of respect from their management.

The season is due to be opened by guest conductor Jaap Van Zweden, an unpopular choice.
