Last night diva to next-gen: Leave Britain now

Last night diva to next-gen: Leave Britain now

Louise Alder is the first British singer for a decade to feature in the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. (Don’t ask why, just happened that way.)

Louise, who spent a decade at Frankfurt Oper, is distraught at the post-Brexit collapse of opera companies and training in the UK.

Here’s what she tells young singers: ‘I do advise them to go abroad. Given the situation funding-wise in this country, we don’t have a choice. There isn’t enough work or money in the arts here.’

More here.

There is nothing contentious in her statement, part of an interview with the Guardian. It is a bare statement of fact, a consequence of the Arts Council’s policy of crushing Glyndebourne Touring, English and Welsh national operas and other institutions around the country. This is the true state of the nation 2025. Louis Alder will represent it admirably at the Last Night.
