New spin: Monteverdi claws back John Eliot Gardiner’s record label

New spin: Monteverdi claws back John Eliot Gardiner’s record label

In the latest tug-of-war between the Monteverdi and Orchestra and its dismissed founder Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the MCO has revived the SDG record label that the conductor founded after his falling out with Deutsche Grammophon ten years ago.

Gardiner called the label SDG for Soli Deo Gloria. Insiders said the initials stood for Sod DG.

Be that as it may, SDG has a backlist of 50 titles and plans for two new releases in the year ahead.

Motets by Bruckner and Gesualdo will be issued in April under conductor Jonathan Sells.

And French conductor Christophe Rousset will next month record ‘Baroque Christmas’ with the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists, featuring Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit and other works.

So it’s SDG without JEG. All clear?
