Iceland mourns composer, 99

Jón Nordal, principal of the Reykjavík School of Music for 43 years, died on December 5 at the age of 99.

He leaves behind large orchestral works and concertos, along with much chamber music, organ works, choral music, songs and more. His obituarist notes: Jón is the author of songs that have a special place in the nation, including the song “Hvert örstutt spor” to the poem by Halldór Laxness and the choral song “Smávinir fagrir” to the poem by Jónas Hallgrímsson, which Jón composed when he was only 14 years old.
