Grammy-winning Tonmeister, RIP

We have received late notification of the death in November of the sound engineer Michael Brammann, winner of two Grammy awards though not – as so often happens – necessarily for his best work,

Michael, who was 77, produced many of the finest recordings of Harnoncourt, Sinopoli, Barenboim and Masur.

His first Grammy, in 2002, was for the Matthew Passion with Harnoncourt. The second, six years later, was for a chamber ensemble.

Jade Hochschule in Oldenburg, where he taught for two decades, posted reminiscence:
In addition to his own extensive knowledge and experience, he also brought his numerous contacts in the great world of music that he had built up over the years. A phone call to Sir Simon Rattle to enable students to attend an orchestra rehearsal in the Berlin Philharmonic? An exclusive tour of the Vienna Musikverein hall? Attracting professional speakers, musicians and instrument makers from Oldenburg for student projects? He made this and much more possible, seemingly on the side, and in doing so regularly opened doors that remained closed to others. He continued to work full-time as a freelance sound engineer.
