Dear Alma, I’ve become nanny to a falling star

Dear Alma, I’ve become nanny to a falling star

From our agony aunt’s mailbag:

Dear Alma,

I am a junior agent in a large, reputable firm. One of our biggest stars has been with us for a number years, and is now in his 30’s. He used to be a mega star, but in the last couple of years, has slipped. I am often left holding the short end of the stick when he shows up late for rehearsal, is underprepared or behaves inappropriately. He hasn’t played any new repertoire in years.

My boss has asked me to start to hold his hand more aggressively, and I will soon have to accompany him on all tours. I find him disagreeable to say the least,  but my boss insists I am the person for the job.

What should I do?

Dear What should I do?,

It seems as if this misbehaving musician is still bringing in a sizable amount of money for your agency. Your boss is worried that this artist will continue to spiral downwards but does not want to deal with it himself. You have been put in a difficult, unfair situation, one which needs professional guidance.

What should I do?, have a meeting with your boss about this, explaining your discomfort. You are not a babysitter or body guard. The artist needs professional guidance, and he needs to be part of the decision making process in order for his behavior to change.

Be firm and clear. You are on their side and want to see this artist thrive once again. He doesn’t need a bandaid, he needs serious help.
