Renee Fleming wrestles with directing an opera

The soprano, 66, will make her directing debut in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Aspen Festival this July, it has been announced in Colorado.

“It’s supposed to be royalty or aristocracy,” she said. “I’m putting this more in high school, 1980, Yarmouth, Massachusetts, at the beginning of World Wide Wrestling. … Also, the early ’80s was Jane Fonda aerobics.”

Fleming last week quit her advisory role at the Trump-Kennedy Center in Washington. She had planned to direct Cosi there in 2021, only to have it cancelled by Covid.
