A quick update o the activities of the Oxford Philharmonic today, an orchestra we have featured several times before! … remember the Vengerov Brahms Gala?

10th April – In this concert that features Humperdinck’s Prelude from Hansel & Gretel, Wieniawski’s Fantaisie brilliante on themes from Gounod’s ‘Faust’, Waxman’s Carmen Fantasy and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8  in G major, Op. 88, the featured soloist in the Wieniawski and Waxman is violinist Bomsori Kim, making her UK debut with the orchestra, conducted by Marios Papadopoulos.  They previously performed together in March 2023 at the Musikverein, Vienna and at venues in Friedrichshafen and Essen, Germany.

 17th April – Sir John Rutter conducts the Oxford Philharmonic Choir in Mozart’s C minor Mass with soloists Lucy Cox – soprano, Sophie Bevan – soprano, Alessandro Fisher – tenor and Gareth Brynmor John – baritone.  Audience members will also be treated to performances of Mozart’s Regina coeli, K. 108 and Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425.  The choir made its welcome debut with the orchestra earlier this season.

 7.30pm / Sheldonian Theatre

Additionally, there will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm by Sir Nicholas Kenyon about the mystery of Mozart’s unfinished C minor Mass.


10th May – The world premiere of Sisyphus by Marcello Palazzo, an alumnus of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual Composers’ Workshop, who will also conduct this part of the performance.  Also included are Piano Concerto No. 1 by Alexey Shor and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major ‘Titan’.  This event features pianist Behzod Abduraimov with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marios Papadopoulos.

22nd May –  This event throws the spotlight on the orchestra’s own concertmaster, Carmine Lauri who will be the soloist in Paganini’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 6.   Also included on the programme are Beethoven’s ‘Coriolan’ Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, featuring the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marios Papadopoulos.
