Pope Francis was a record buff with very specific tastes

Pope Francis was a record buff with very specific tastes

Three years ago, we published a photo of Pope Francis nipping out of a record store in Rome. The Vatican posted a hasty press release, saying he had just blessed the shop after renovation. But His Holiness, whose death was announced today, was a habitual browser whose personal collection exceeded two thousand albums.

His favourites trickled out in various confessions down the years.

They included:
Et Incarnatus Est from Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor
The Leonore 3 overture from Beethoven’s Fidelio
Astor Piazzola’s Libertango from his native Argentina
Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament
The voice of Edith Piaf

His favourite pianist was Clara Haskil.

He was a Furtwangler fan.

More here.
