The orchestra will lay Stolpersteine on May 10 in front of the Philharmonie in memory of four Jewish musicians who were evicted by the Nazis and forced to emigrate.
The four were: first concertmaster Szymon Goldberg (pictured), first violinist Gilbert Back, and the two principal cellists Nicolai Graudan and Joseph Schuster.
The laying of the Stolpersteine commemorates their artistic significance and their fates. Afterwards, the four musicians will be honoured in the Chamber Music Hall with short musical contributions by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. In the second part of the concert, the Varian Fry Quartet will play Erwin Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet, and Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet op. 44, No. 1. The performance of works by these two composers was forbidden during the Nazi era. The concert will be hosted by Shelly Kupferberg.
The event is open to the public and can be attended with a donation of at least 5 euros in aid of the Margot Friedländer Foundation.
