Pulitzer Prize-winning composer dies, 91

The thoughtful American composer Richard Wernick died yesterday at the age of 91.

Many of his works are for chamber and vocal ensembles He won the Pulitzer in 1977 for Visions of Terror and Wonder .

In 1983 Riccardo Muti chose him as Consultant for New Music to the Philadelphia Orchestra, a post he held until the end of the decade. He was professor of composition at the University of Pennsylvania, from 1968 to 1996.
