Leif-Ove Andsnes: I started out in a brass band

The Norwegian pianist tells David Krauss on Speaking Soundly about growing up with a father who conducted brass bands. Leif-Ove played euphonium until he was 17. He also sang in a church choir.

‘I am in despair when I see that schools don’t teach singing any more,’ he sighs.

He grew up on a small island. ‘I had no idea what it was to be a professional musician. I see myself, nine or ten, sitting alone, reading through some easier pieces by Grieg or Chopin, and doing this all myself. My way.’
