Just in: Chicago’s harpist retires after 63 years

Lynne Turner, who was appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1962 by Music Director Fritz Reiner, will retire at the end of this summer’s Ravinia Festival, it was announced today.

Turner first appeared with the Orchestra at the age of 14, in 1956, performing the first movement of George Frideric Handel’s Harp Concerto in B-flat Major at four Young People’s Concerts. She was a member of the Civic Orchestra from 1956 until 1959.Her father, Sol Turner, had been concertmaster of the Civic Orchestra, later plaing in the CSO, the Saint Louis Symphony and the NBC-Chicago orchestras. Her brother brother, Richard Turner,was principal harp of the Winnipeg Symphony from 1977 for 45 years.
