Australia opens opera co-production with China

When The Magic Flute opens tonight in Hong Kong it will be the first major opera co-production between China and Australia.

The project likes State Opera South Australia with Opera Hong Kong, the Beijing Music Festival and China National Opera House. It moves to Adelaide in August, then to Beijing in 2026.

SOSA music director Dane Andrew KwangLiang Lam says: ‘Opera originated as an art form in Europe in the last millennium, but it is still as vital and (gasp) relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago. Here we are, on the opposite side of the globe to the traditional “home” of opera, yet we continue to demonstrate how an antipodean lens can keep our beloved art from fresh and vital.’
