Following the G7 summit in Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new round of sanctions targeting Russian individuals and entities, as well as more than 200 vessels from the so-called “shadow fleet” that have been transporting Russian oil above the international price cap.
The Canadian sanctions list names more than 70 individuals, including:
Conductor Valery Gergiev
Vladimir Putin’s former wife, Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, and her husband, Artur Ocheretny
Putin’s cousin once removed, Mikhail Shelomov
Boris Yeltsin’s daughter, Tatyana Yumasheva, and her husband, Valentin Yumashev
Former Rosnano head Anatoly Chubais
InfoWatch CEO Natalya Kasperskaya
Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl
Former Nord Stream 2 director Matthias Warnig
Irina Viner, former head coach of Russia’s national rhythmic gymnastics team
A statement from the office of Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand called the move “one of Canada’s most important sanctions announcements since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.” It also marks the country’s largest sanctions package to date targeting maritime shipping and trade.
Anti-Corruption Foundation chairwoman Maria Pevchikh said that Canada had sanctioned every person included in the “List 50” — a roster of individuals from Vladimir Putin’s inner circle compiled by allies of Alexey Navalny after his death in a Russian prison in February 2024. She noted that the names appear in the Canadian sanctions list in the same order as in the original list.
