The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, based in San Francisco, has named Peter Whelan as its next music director.
Whelan, 47, will take up the baton a year from now. He succeeds Richard Egarr.
Meantime, he will make his BBC Proms conducting debut with Handel’s Alexander’s Feast, performed by the Irish Baroque Orchestra.
