Wind is no help as Glyndebourne goes dark in power cut

Saturday’s performance of Saul had to be abandoned minutes before the final curtain because of a power outage. The announcements from the stage were almost inaudible from my seat in the Upper Circle, but I gathered that the outage began just before the long interval, and that subsequently the performance was using an emergency power supply, ie a big battery. That supply finally ran out shortly before the end of the opera, so we all left with no resolution of the plot and with no curtain calls. Sad for the performers.

As we left, I gazed up at Glyndebourne’s solitary (but enormous) wind turbine, magnificently motionless in the still and balmy evening air.
