Death of eminent countertenor, 83

Death of eminent countertenor, 83

Francis Brett has posted on social media: ‘I’m very sad to announce the death of my Father, Charles Brett on 24th June, peacefully at home. Having seen him earlier that morning I could tell he felt the time was right. He will be greatly missed. We are planning a memorial with details to be announced in due course.’

Charles Brett was, with James Bowman and Paul Esswood, one of the commanding countertenors of the post-Alfred Deller era. He made recordings with Britten, Roy Goodman, Gardiner, Herreweghe, Hillier and others, and was co-founder of the Amaryllis Consort in 1983.
