BBC scraps two musician jobs, adds one suit

BBC scraps two musician jobs, adds one suit

We reported last month that two strings positions in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra have been abolished, and without a peep from the MU.

With the salaries saved, the orchestra has hired a spare executive.

Statement by the BBC Phil:

We are delighted to share the news that Edward Edgcumbe will be joining us as our new Head of Artistic Planning & Production in July.
On his appointment, Edward says:
‘I’m over the moon to be joining the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. I can’t wait to play my part in the life of this outstanding orchestra, and contribute my curiosity to programmes that invite audiences to meet the unfamiliar and experience their favourite musical works. Perhaps the most exciting thing of all is the sheer range of these musicians and the variety of places in which they perform with equal brilliance, whether that’s live on BBC Radio 3 from the Philharmonic Studio, the Bridgewater Hall, or a Manchester primary school.’
Edward comes to us from the Dunedin Consort, where he is currently Head of Artistic Planning & Operations. Edward is also a trustee at Cumbernauld Theatre in North Lanarkshire and the Co-Founder of ‘Hold the Drama’, a collective of musicians working together to create inclusive performances that inspire conversations about emotions and feelings.
