Concertmaster dies, 44

Concertmaster dies, 44

The Finnish music world is in mourning for an outstanding violinist, Eriikka Maalismaa, who succumbed yesterday in hospital to a fast-progressing condition. Eriikka, concertmaster of the Helsinki Philharmonic fro 2006 to 2016, gave the world premiere of Veli Kujala’s Auseil violin concerto. She was later involved with the Avanti! chamber orchestra.

She became director of a new-music festival in her hometown Oulu and was an impassioned advocate for increased music funding and improved social justice.
