Court throws out Salzburg defamation case

Court throws out Salzburg defamation case

A Hamburg court has ruled in favour of the gadfly website Backstage Classical, which had been subjected to a cease-and-desist injunction by the Salzburg Festival artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser.

Backstage publisher Axel Brüggemann had been accused of defamation for writing that the Salzburg Festival was attempting to silence critics. Brüggemann said today: ‘The readers of BackstageClassical have made it possible through their support for investigative, independent and opinionated journalism to assert itself.’

The case will now move up to the Hamburg superior court.
