Danes mourn Ukrainian concertmaster

The Ukrainian violinist Alexandre Zapolski, concertmaster of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, has died of cancer at the age of 74.

Originally from Ukraine, he migrated to Copenhagen in 1992 and became a powerhouse in Danish musical life, founding the Zapolski String Quartet and the Zapolski Strings, all the while leading the radio orchestra and teaching at the Royal Danish Academy.

He also created the Copenhagen Winter Festival.
