French region is first to scrap arts subsidies

The Mediterranean Département of Hérault, which includes the city of Montpellier, has abolished its arts grants, worth 6 million Euros a year.

The leader of the socialist council Kléber Mesquida has promised to eliminate by ‘all non-obligatory expenditure and subsidies’.

Hérault becomes the first region in France to abolish arts support.
