Get Carter: Stuttgart names Aussie chief

The Australian Nicholas Carter, who is presently chief conductor at Oper Bern in Switzerland, has been named Generalmusikdirektor of Staatsoper Stuttgart, one of the leading German houses. He will succeed Cornelius Meister in 2006.

Stuttgart says it chose Carter for his Wagner experience as well as his contemporary affinities. He gave the US premiere of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at the Met, having cut his professional teeth as Simone Young’s assistant conductor in Hamburg.
