Hot tip: Esa-Pekka to Paris

Hot tip: Esa-Pekka to Paris

We hear the Orchestre de Paris is about to name Esa-Pekka Salonen as its next music director. The official word is expected within hours.

E-P, who is 67, will replace his fellow-Finn Klaus Mäkelä, whose callow charm could not mask his inexperience.

The senior Finn has been music director in London, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Paris pays exceptionally well and is open to the nouveau chic of contemporary music. He’ll make a good fit.

And he won’t have to learn any more French than Paavo Järvi did.
