Introducing: The Alastair Macaulay review

Every weekend from now, Slippedisc will publish a review by Alastair Macaulay, one of the most respected active critics of the lively arts.

Alastair was chief dance critic of the New York Times for 12 years.

Before that, he was chief theatre critic of the Financial Times, where he also reviewed opera and concerts. Few writers have an equivalent breadth of interests and knowledge.

Alastair is a critic in the classical mode, one who tells you what happened and makes you feel you were there, while taking the reader deep into the background of what is being performed.

Since retiring from the New York Times and returning home to London, Alastair has reviewed occasionally for slippedisc. His weekly review will now become a fixture on this site, along with additional features to be rolled out in the course of this year.
