Here’s the official intro:
This highly anticipated debut release showcases a selection of Izik-Dzurko’s remarkable performances from the competition, including Chopin’s Scherzo No. 1 in B minor, Op. 20, Ravel’s Miroirs I-V, and Ligeti’s Études Book 1 (Nos. 5 & 6).
Jaeden Izik-Dzurko won the Gold Medal at the 21st edition of the Leeds International Piano Competition in September. Praised for his artistry, Dame Imogen Cooper, Chair of the Jury, said:
He demonstrated exceptional artistic maturity and imagination, remarkable technical command, and a profound ability to captivate and transport the audience through his storytelling and poetry throughout the Competition.
The digital album is part of Izik-Dzurko’s career-changing prize package, which includes engagements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Wigmore Hall, Steinway Prize Winner Concerts Network and more.
A studio recording with Warner Classics is still to follow.
So what’s it like?
The Chopin First Scherzo is notable for its clarity )a low-pedal approach) and linear awareness. It is intelligent if not yet quite fully formed. His Ravel, however, is: if you listen to one track, listen to “Une barque su l’océan” (the complete Miroirs is included).
Thee is no doubting his repeated notes are to die for (“Alborada del gracioso”).
Both the Chopin and the Ravel were from the second round, and you can see that also via YouTube:
