Nicola Benedetti: What if my daughter really hates classical music?

The Scottish violinist and Edinburgh Festival director is in chatty mood when David Krauss, principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera, sits her down for a one-to-one.

They are connected by a mutual friendship with Wynton Marsalis.

‘You play more notes in one concerto that I do in a year,’ David exclaims.

When playing the Marsalis concerto, Nicky talks of ‘waking up a more improvisatory part of my personality’.
