The storm-tossed Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has a new chief executive – its fifth in a decade – and he has arrived with a masterplan.
Jung Jae-wal brandished the plan at a press conference this morning and talked of ‘reaching a level where we can compete with the world’s most prestigious orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic.’
He continued: ‘This is not an unrealistic goal. I believe that by achieving the necessary steps in stages, we can become world-class. The SPO will lead hallyu (Korean wave) in the classical music sector,’ adding that a more detailed master plan is coming in June.
Of his music director he said: ‘I think our maestro and the SPO have great chemistry. Our goals align and I have 100 percent trust in (Jaap) van Zweden.’
Jung Jae-wal, 61, is a former journalist and arts centre manager. Top jobs at the Seoul Philharmonic have tended to go to political appointees.
