From a Russian glamour magazine:
Vasily Sokolov told his colleagues that he bought a bottle of non-carbonated water at the buffet near the historical stage, took a sip, but spat out the contents because instead of water there was either a solvent or acid. As a result, the artist was hospitalized with burns to the oral cavity.
The frightening story immediately spread around the Bolshoi. The singer’s colleague made a post in the general chat. Another employee told about the emergency in an audio message. “My dears, today before the orchestral rehearsal our soloist Vasya Sokolov bought a bottle of drinking water from the buffet of the Bolshoi Theater. It was sealed, he opened it with difficulty and took a sip. It’s good that he simply left the water in his mouth, did not swallow further, then barely managed to spit it out,” said Sokolov’s colleague.
The woman explained that the bottle was full of chemicals, the baritone got a burn of the entire oral cavity down to the tonsils and the destruction of the enamel of his teeth. She warned the soloists of the theater: “Until the end of the rehearsal, he simply had bloody saliva, he burned everything. They began to check the bottles, it turned out that the whole batch was either with a solvent or something. Be careful, because it is unknown how many such bottles there are. Just in case, when you open a bottle, smell it first,” the Bolshoi Theater employee added.
Panic broke out among the artists, the water was withdrawn from sale for testing, warnings were issued, Rospotrebnadzor began preparing for an inspection, and investigators began to open a criminal case. Ukrainian nationalists rushed to take responsibility for the sabotage. However, everything turned out to be much more prosaic. There was no story about water poisoning. Sokolov made it up to avoid a scolding from his superiors and penalties, the Mash Telegram channel reports.
The night before, the singer was in a rock club on Dubrovka with a girl. He had a conflict with another inebriated visitor, who somehow looked at Vasily’s companion the wrong way. The musician stood up for her, a scuffle ensued, during which he was hit on the head with a beer mug and taken to hospital. The artist was afraid to reveal the real reason for the hospitalization. He made up a story about poisoned water in order to avoid condemnation, a reprimand, or even dismissal for disrupting the production during the tense pre-New Year period.
