Tributes have been pouring in for the much loved Latvian cellist Marta Sudraba, who died this weekend, aged 50.
From Kristina Blaumane:
Dear Marta, I can’t believe, I can not accept that you are gone… How is that?? You who were so strong, so bright, so beautiful! In which room you were, all eyes were on you. You were a star since childhood, set as an example to all young cellists. You and I walked the same path from the age of 6, we were classmates, studied almost always with the same teachers, started studying LMA together, first job in the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra at the same desk. Even in London we were together for one year. I am unable to separate my childhood and youth from you. Your melting energy, your striking texts, your charisma, wanted to be in your company. I remember our piano playing and singing at chamber orchestra parties, our uncontrollable laughter in our early youth, even during cello lessons, our walks in Old Riga after orchestra rehearsals. You could be very direct and sharp, but you could also be sweet and sincere. Middle road and compromise were not your allies.
Time passes, the paths of life change, but the people with whom you walked the childhood paths remain almost like relatives.
Dear, beautiful Marta, may you have a bright path to eternity! You are now with your dear mommy, whose departure you never could come to terms with..
Deepest condolences to Martha’s closest relatives-husband Sebastian and son Kristap, friends and everyone who loved and respected Marta.
From Eva Bindere:
Today is a dark dark day. Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra has lost somebody who has been unique, who had enough fire for us all, who had it all. Marta Sudraba. My classmate in Riga. Our first cello. Who could always be high class from a first note. We studied in Basel, Marta with Thomas Demenga, me with Raphael Oleg. We slept on a floor in an apartment she rented. Took turns to sleep on the only matress we had. In Latvian woollen socks and sweaters because it was cold at night. We wanted to be in music, we practiced. We sat on a floor and listened to Sting. We did fight sometimes. Marta had a character and she wanted to go only higher, only better. We played, I took an A from her, Kremerata tuned and we went on stage. Million times. We all had to go with her energy, yes, it was strong enough to go through mountains. Then life took different turns, Marta found her love and was in Vienna. And now something took her away. Am looking at the sky and Marta is there. Looking at us from the other side. Marta, Marta, sweetie. We can not. We can not accept it. We are heartbroken. I can not stop crying. So many memories are gone. So much music which we shared. It is all now a breath, a whisper. Marta, I never wanted to write an obituary, not even think of one. We had to do it for you, with Ula and my daughter Anna, we tried to say something in the name of Kremerata, a last goodbye, a last tender embrace. I hope you feel our love and our hearts now.
My deepest condolences to Marta’s husband Sebastian Gürtler and to Marta’s son Kristaps. To all who knew her. It is an irreplaceable loss.
From Alicja Smietana:
Right now I cannot find the right words…
Beautiful, always smiling, dear Marta Sudraba…. You will be always remembered…
From Andris Dzenītis:
Marta will always be remembered as a beautiful, radiant, mythical without discounts in music, at the same time – humanely unprotective straight person. These three qualities in her presence made it possible to feel and believe in the real world without pretense and intellectual masks. We collaborated once in music – 2016. a year in the opus “Quidditas” dedicated to her. In philosophy, this term means the deepest essence of a thing, in a literal emptiness – “KASība”. Just like Martha herself.
