Vienna Volksoper has 11 new shows and a queer Bat

Volksoper director Lotte de Beer claims that a quarter of her audience is under 30. In the coming season, announced this morning, she’s pitching for pink Euros with a Pride Week Fledermaus in June 2026.

Also on show: Spring Awakening, based on Frank Wedekind’s play, has been turned into a rock musical about youthful longing, sexual self-discovery and the clash of generations.

A Night in Venice (Strauss) is ‘a hedonistic masque full of confusion, waltzes, and female power’.

The Pirates of Penzance is performed in the styler of Monty Python, with Chloe Rooke conducting and Katia Ledoux as the Pirate King.

Killing Carmen is ‘based on Bizet’.
