YALE PHILHARMONIA RETURNS TO CARNEGIE HALL THIS MONDAY

YALE PHILHARMONIA RETURNS TO CARNEGIE HALL THIS MONDAY

Yale School of Music comes to New York this Monday.  “Rippling with high-energy percussion and brass playing and a fluid interplay of polished strings as well as winds…”  is how The New York Times described the Yale Philharmonia, one of the nation’s foremost music school ensembles.

For the Yale Philharmonia’s first appearance at Carnegie Hall since 2012, Principal Conductor, Peter Oundjian, presents dazzling showpieces by Joan Tower, Benjamin Britten, and Hector Berlioz.   Each showcases the virtuosity and fire of these young musicians.  “I am thrilled to bring this exceptional orchestra to Carnegie Hall,” said Oundjian, “and equally thrilled to be joined by the extraordinary violinist Augustin Hadelich, with whom I have joyously shared the stage many times.”  The concert opens with Tower’s world premiere, a new Suite based on her 1991 Concerto for Orchestra, which Oundjian conducted last summer with Tower in attendance.   “I’m delighted to present a new work by Joan Tower, who is a longtime friend and colleague – and a national treasure,” says Oundjian.

Now a staple of the repertoire, Britten’s bracing Violin Concerto had its triumphant world premiere at Carnegie Hall in 1940.  Soloist Augustin Hadelich joined the Yale School of Music violin faculty in 2021.  “The essence of his playing is beauty,” declares The Washington Post, “reveling in the myriad ways of making a phrase come alive on the violin.”   The Yale Philharmonia’s return to Carnegie concludes with the mesmerizing Symphonie fantastique. Berlioz’s hallucinatory showpiece will vividly display the breathtaking talent of these young musicians on the cusp of their careers.  Tickets for this Monday’s performance start at only $29 and can be ordered by phone at 212-247-7800, or online at CarnegieHall.org.  Slipped Disc readers can enjoy a 25% discount on tickets with this code: YPH49394.
