Death of Covent Garden principal, 96

Death of Covent Garden principal, 96

The death has belatedly been brought to our attention of Jeannette Sinclair, principal soprano at the Royal Opera House from 1956 to 1966. She died on April 11, her 96th birthday.

Jeannette sang Sister Constance in the UK premiere of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites, as well as many leading roles in standard repetoire, featuring in multiple broadcasts and recordings. Among her conductors were Kubeli, Klemperer, Solti and Vittorio Gui.

None of the national newspapers or opera magazines noted her passing, with the lone exception of the Jewish Chronicle, in August.

There is only one recording to be foundd on Youtube.

Sic transit harmoniae mundi.
