Vienna loses an iconic establishment

Vienna loses an iconic establishment

The Musikverein in Vienna has been home to the music publisher Universal Edition since 1914. That arrangement has now come to an end, reports Axel Brüggemann.

The publisher has (been) given notice to leave by the end of 2025. It says: ‘As part of its strategic considerations, Universal Edition has made the decision to consolidate the majority of employees from its two locations (Musikverein and Forsthausgasse in the 20th district) at a single location as part of an adjustment to the rent for the 1914 lease agreement that the Musikverein is considering. This is a unique opportunity in the history of Universal Edition.’

Any time I visited the UE premises, I was aware that I stood iin a high-ceilinged room where Schoenberg, Janacek, Kurt Weill and Boulez signed their contracts. Now, the place will be let at a commercial rent. It’s the end of an epoch in modern music, almost the end of a civilisation.

Here’s Axel’s report.
