Review: Martha bangs it out with Lahav

Review from Tel Aviv by Dan Yakir:

The special chamber concert with Martha Argerich and Lahav Shani yesterday at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium was sold out. The hall has 2,500 seats and a few extra rows were added on the stage.

It started with Ravel Ma Mère L’Oye for four hands and ended with a bang: Bartók sonata for two pianos and percussion. Martha and Lahav were joined by Dan Moshayev, the principal timpanist of the Israel Philharmonic, and Ziv Stein, the principal percussionist of the Israel Philharmonic.

As an encore they replayed the third movement of Ma Mère L’Oye (Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas) – this time in the arrangement of Peter Sadlo for piano four hands and percussion.

Argerich will conclude her visit to Israel tonight with the fifth subscription concert with the Israel Philharmonic under Lahav Shani playing Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 with Yigal Meltzer, the principal trumpeter of the Philharmonic. The concerts took place in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa.
