The Prague composer Viktor Ullmann was incarcerated by the Nazis in the Theresiendstadt concentration camp before being sent to be killed in Auschwitz in October 1944. Ullmann is mostly remembered for his concentration camp opera, The Emperor of Atlantis.
But there is a substantial body of Ullmann works – including seven piano sonatas – and the German pianist Annika Treutler is doing her best to keep his music alive as a monument to the world that was destroyed.
