Schwarzenegger’s Finn, 95

Taina Elg, the only Finnish acress ever to have made it in Hollywood, has died at an advanced age.

A prodigy at Finnish National Ballet, she moved on after the Russians bombed and occupied her home in Viipuri, winning roles in Sweden, the UK and Monte Carlo before making it in Hollywood.

Signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1954, she is the only Finn ever to have won a Golden Globe.

She appeared in in Cole Porter’s musical Les Girls (1957) opposite Gene Kelly and in a 1959 remake of The 39 Steps opposite Kenneth More. As screen roles declined she appared in Hercules in New York (1970) alongside the emergent Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Later she turned to stage musicals, notably Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music”.
