Final blow: Alison Balsom retires

Final blow: Alison Balsom retires

The trumpet star has announced that next month’s Last Night of the Proms will be her farewell performance.

Balsom, who is 46, has enjoyed a solo career for 24 years. The last piece she plays will be the Hummel concerto, saying she wants to spend more time with family.

She has a daughter with the film director Sam Mendes, whom she married in 2017, and a son from a former relationship with the London Philharmonic conductor Ed Gardner.
