Janacek’s time has truly come

Janacek’s time has truly come

Tonight in Berlin, the Staatsoper launches a new production of The Excursions of Mr Broucek.

Tomorrow in Munich, the Staatsoper opens a new Katya Kabanova.

This is not a Janacek anniversary year. It is routine programming in major German opera houses, a sign that the composer and his works are now staple repertoire, enjoyed by regular audiences. It has taken a long while. A generation ago, the only Janacek to be seen on German stages was Jenufa. But British batons itched to conduct the Czech genius, as they do routinely at home, and Rattle particularly helped the path to acceptance.
