New boss is dropped into Bayreuth

New boss is dropped into Bayreuth

The Bavarian and German federal governments have imposed Matthias Rädel as General Manager of the Bayreuth Festival.

He will oversee all financial and administrative matters, freeing Katharina Wagner to focus entirely on the artistic side.

Rädel has been Deputy Managing Director and Chief Controller at Deutsche Oper Berlin for 19 years.

He stays in the shadows. No photograph has been issued, or found.

The announcement was made days before the opening of the 2025 Bayreuth Festival, where tickets are still glaringly available.
