Sad death of an English conductor, 68

Sad death of an English conductor, 68

We have been notified of the death from cancer of Matthew Best, the renowned bass singer and conductor of numerous ensembles. Matthew, who was 68, founded the Corydon Singers in 1973 and was a regular conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra.

In 1983 he began a long relationship with Hyperion Records, starting with a Bruckner motet and extending to Brahms, Mendelssohn and more. His account of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music is unequalled.
